Is the Japan Rail Pass still worth it in 2026?

Since the October 2023 price increase (7-day pass rose from about 29,650 to 50,000 yen), the JR Pass no longer automatically pays off for many itineraries. With only 1-2 long-distance trips (e.g. a single Tokyo-Kyoto round trip), single tickets are often cheaper. The pass pays off mainly when you cover many long-distance routes in a short time, e.g. Tokyo-Sapporo plus further Hokkaido/Kansai routes.

Does the JR Pass cover the Nozomi and Mizuho Shinkansen?

No. On the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen lines, the JR Pass does not cover the fastest trains, Nozomi and Mizuho. Pass holders instead take Hikari or Kodama (usually only slightly slower) or buy a separate Nozomi/Mizuho ticket supplement (roughly 4,700-5,000 yen extra, only available at ticket counters/machines in Japan).

How much does the Japan Rail Pass cost in 2026?

As of summer 2026: 7 days Ordinary 50,000 yen / Green Car 70,000 yen, 14 days Ordinary 80,000 yen / Green Car 110,000 yen, 21 days Ordinary 100,000 yen / Green Car 140,000 yen. From 1 October 2026, prices at overseas sales agents rise further.
